SUPPORTING ERITREAN REFUGEES WHO ARE VICTIMS OF GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE LIVING IN ADDIS ABABA

The Ethiopian Center for Development (ECD), with support from the U.S. Embassy Addis Ababa, implemented "Supporting Eritrean Refugees Who Are Victims of Gender-Based Violence Living in Addis Ababa" project to improve the wellbeing, resilience, and economic empowerment of Eritrean refugee women and girls affected by gender-based violence (GBV). The project targeted vulnerable refugees and host community members living in Yeka and Nifas Silk Lafto Sub-Cities of Addis Ababa.
The initiative provided comprehensive psychosocial support, counseling services, dignity kits, and hygiene materials to GBV survivors, helping them recover from trauma and rebuild their confidence and wellbeing. The project also strengthened local support systems by training psychosocial workers and counselors to deliver quality, survivor-centered services.
To promote long-term self-reliance, the project offered Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and business development training to selected participants. Women who successfully completed the training were organized into income-generating groups and received start-up materials to launch businesses in garment production, coffee making, and laundry services.
In addition, ECD conducted community awareness activities, including the celebration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and World Refugee Day, bringing together refugees, host communities, government institutions, and development partners to promote social cohesion, gender equality, and protection for women and girls.
Through a holistic approach that combined psychosocial care, economic empowerment, and community engagement, the project contributed to creating safer, more inclusive, and more resilient communities while enabling survivors to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
