STRENGTHENING THE CAPACITY OF CSOS FOR INCREASED AND MEANINGFUL PARTICIPATION OF WOMEN IN PEACEBUILDING AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION

The Ethiopian Center for Development (ECD), with support from UN Women, implemented a project aimed at strengthening the capacity of grassroots women’s organizations to promote women’s meaningful participation in peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and decision-making processes in the Sidama and Southern regions of Ethiopia.
Recognizing that women remain underrepresented in peace and security initiatives despite their vital role in sustaining social cohesion and community resilience, the project focused on enhancing the knowledge, skills, and advocacy capacity of women-led organizations. Through a series of training programs, advocacy workshops, consultative meetings, networking events, and awareness-raising campaigns, the project empowered women leaders and community members to engage more effectively in peace and security processes.
The initiative directly supported four grassroots women’s organizations, providing training on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agendas, conflict resolution, peacebuilding, advocacy, negotiation, dialogue, and mediation skills. It also facilitated the development of advocacy strategies, strengthened collaboration among women’s organizations, and established a regional network to collectively advance women’s participation in peacebuilding and governance.
As a result, more than 300 women leaders and community members enhanced their knowledge and capacity, while the participating organizations strengthened their ability to advocate for gender equality and increased representation of women in conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts. The project laid a foundation for sustainable collaboration, local ownership, and continued advocacy for women’s rights, leadership, and participation in building peaceful and inclusive communities.
